Pioneers Knock Off Knights

The Alfred State women's basketball team started fast and never looked back as they knocked off Central Penn 88-63 on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers shot 47.9% from the field and led by as many as 27 in the contest.

The Pioneers raced out to a 16-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game and led 28-11 at the end of the 1st quarter and 46-24 at halftime. The Knights cut the lead to nine, 61-52, late in the 3rd quarter but Alfred State back to twenty with a strong push in the first five minutes of the 4th quarter.

Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond), Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville), and Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) led the way for the Pioneers. Bialecki recorded a double-double with 28 points and 11 boards to go allowin the seven blocks and four steals. Anderson finished with 17 points, 11 assists, and six rebounds while Salatel had 10 points. Janae Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) added seven points while Eternity Rampersant (Brooklyn/Coney Island Prep), Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca), and Emily Benes (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy) each had six points.

The Pioneers were 35 for 73 from the floor, 6 for 15 from three, and 12 for 31 from the foul line. They held a 55 to 51 advantage on the boards and forced the Knights into 24 turnovers.

Jaylynn Burton had a huge game for the Knights. She finished with 39 points and 15 boards with 25 points and 10 rebounds coming in the 3rd quarter. Deveja Cooper added eight points and 13 boards while Wislene Verna chipped in eight. Central Penn shot 26.1% from the floor on the day, 20% from three, and 66.7% (26 for 39) from the foul line.

The blue & gold are back in action on Tuesday when they host Fredonia. Opening tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
