Pioneers Win Second Straight

The Alfred State women's basketball team used a strong 4th quarter to earn their second straight victory, 66-57 over SUNY Delhi on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 8-12 on the season with two contests remaining on the schedule.

The Pioneers led 10-9 after the 1st quarter but struggled in the 2nd quarter before a late run cut the Bronco lead to 25-23 at the half. The blue & gold outscored Delhi 17-15 in the 3rd quarter and the teams went into the final 10 minutes knotted at 40-40. With a 48-47 lead with 6:57 remaining, the Pioneers went on a 6-0 run to take control of the game. The Broncos cut the lead to three once in the final four minutes but could not get any closer.

The blue & gold used their size advantage in the contest as Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) and Janae Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) recorded double-doubles. Bialecki had 24 points, 13 boards, six blocks, and five assist while Gibson finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) had 10 points and Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) chipped in nine points and eight boards.

The Pioneers shot 36.8% from the field and held a 60 to 45 advantage on the boards including a 18 to 10 advantage on the offensive glass.

Samiaya Salley led the Broncos with 23 points and 10 boards while Katie Herba finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Camryn McDonald also finished in double-figures with 10 points and 13 boards. Delhi (15-10) shot 33.8% from the floor on the day.

The blue & gold are right back on the court tomorrow when they host SUNY Canton at 1 p.m. Prior to the game the coaching staff will honor the senior class.
