Solid 2nd Half Helps Pioneers Past Express

Alfred State outscored Wells 48-32 in the 2nd half as they earned a 78-57 victory in their home opener. The Pioneers are now 2-1 in the early season.

The Pioneers led 17-15 after the 1st quarter and 30-25 at the half. The blue & gold shot 42.1% in the 3rd and then 69.2% in the 4th as they were able to expand their lead and cruise to the victory.

Janae Gibson (Bronx/Pelham Prep) had a big night in the block for the Pioneers. She finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds (eight offensive). Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) came off the bench and scored 15 (3 for 4 from three) and grabbed eight boards while her sister Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) finished with 14 points. Emily Benes (Buffalo/Mount Mercy) chipped in 12 points and four steals.

Pioneer guards Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) and AP Acosta (Bronx/Evander Childs) both had big games as well. Anderson had nine points, five assists, and four boards while Acosta had six points and six assists.

Shelby Medovich led Wells with 22 points while Carley Ryan finished with 18.

Alfred State shot 45.2% for the game, was 6 for 16 from three, and hit 72.7% from the foul line. Wells shot 33.9% from the field, was 3 for 12 from three, and hit 77.8 from the foul line. The Pioneers held a 47 to 31 rebounding advantage in the contest.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they host Oswego at 1 p.m.
