Pioneers Comeback Falls Short

The Alfred State Women's Basketball team hosted Penn.- St. Altoona and fell 58-53.

A defensive start to the game saw no points for either side in the first 2 minutes. Penn.- St. Altoona jumped to a 5-0 lead before the Pioneers answered with 5 of their own to knot it up. The quarter ended with ASC up one 11-10. A back and forth second quarter came with three lead changes. The Pioneers headed into the locker room down one point 22-21 after an Altoona three-pointer beat the buzzer to take the lead. In the third, Altoona knocked in two straight deep balls to extend their lead and held it throughout. The Pioneers went into the fourth quarter down 43-30. Midway through the final quarter the Pioneers cut the Altoona lead to four 49-45. The game stayed within one possession the rest of the way. A Pioneer miss on their final possession led to Altoona free throws that iced the game.

Some standouts for the Pioneers include:

Faith McCombs (Amityville, NY / Copaigue): McCombs tallied another double-double. She had 16 rebounds and ten points on 5-7 shooting.

Taylor Benjamin (Newark Valley, NY / Newark Valley): Benjamin had 18 points and 11 rebounds, notching a double-double of her own.

Alfred State is back in action on Wednesday, February 8 at Hilbert. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip.
