Pioneers Finish 12th at Fall Brawl

The Alfred State wrestling team finished 12th out of 15 teams at the Ursinus College Fall Brawl on Saturday.

Dan Ognibene (Alexander) led the Pioneers with 4-2 record in the heavyweight competition. He opened the day with a 7-0 victory over Brett Ackerley (Delaware Valley). He fell in his next match but rebounded with three straight consolation bracket victories; 2-0 over Matt Jorgensen (Delaware Valley), a pin of Jacob Sentz (Stevens), and a 6-1 win over Steven Paul (Elizabethtown). His day came to an end in the consolation quarterfinals when he fell 12-7 to Noah Gesford (Delaware Valley).

Conner Fox (Midlakes) was 3-2 on the day in the 174 lb. weight class. He started the day with a 17-1 victory over Tony Leon (WCU) but was tripped up in his next match. In the consolation bracket he pinned John Felice (Mt. St. Vincent) and defeated Adeshola Logunieko (Mt. St. Vincent) 7-3 before falling to Keyshaun Ward (Liberty) 10-4 to end his day.

Five other Pioneers registered a victory on the day. Each wrestler finished 1-2 on the day

  • Edwin Uruchima (Queens) earned a 10-3 decision over Matt Suchow (Hunter) at 125
  • Anthony Carome (Cincinnati, OH) earned a 7-0 decision over Blaine Blampied (Stevens) at 157
  • Josh Simons (Campbell Savona) earned a 13-2 decision over teammate Josh Lord at 165
  • At 197, Travis Harvey (Alfred Almond) defeated Ricky Tisinger (McDaniel) 7-0 and Kyle Reynolds (Pine Valley) pinned Nick Giancaspro (Mt. St. Vincent).

The host school Ursinus won the overal team competition with 144 points followed by The College of New Jersey's 134. The Pioneers finished with 20 points on the day.

The Pioneers have a week before they travel to Ithaca for the NYS Championships at Cornell University. The NYS Championships features wrestlers from every college that sponsors in New York.
