Almeter Wins Title at JCC Open

Tristan Almeter (Elma/Iroquois) claimed the title at 184 lbs. at the Jamestown CC Open on Sunday. Almeter was one of four Pioneers that placed in the non-scoring event.

Almeter earned three hard fought victories to claim the title. He defeated Tim Collins (Brockport) 9-7 in the quarterfinals and then downed Bryce Rowe (Brockport) in the semifinals to advance to the finals. In the finals he defeated Jamestown's Cameron Page 9-4 to claim the title. Page is the #2 wrestler in the 184 lb. weight class in the NJCAA.

Mike Galton (Warsaw) and Ryan Mattison (Brockport) both finished in their weight brackets.

  • Galton was 3-1 in the 157 lb. competition. He won 9-3 over Owen Balas (Gannon) and 5-3 over Spencer Head (Mercyhurst North East) to advance to the semis. In the semifinals he had a dominant tech fall victory 20-1 over Michael Phelps (Niagara CCC). In the finals he lost a tight 6-3 decision to Alex Farenchak (Gannon Unattached).
  • Mattison was also 3-1 in the heavyweight bracket. He pinned Boaz Smart (Brockport) in 5:46, earned a 5-0 victory over Zach Reed (Niagara), and downed his teammate Kyle Fitzgerald 12-1 to advance to the finals. In the finals, he fell to Jake Peru (Unattached).

Kyle Fitzgerald (Turin/South Lewis) finished 5th at heavyweight following a 3-2 day. He won 7-0 over Nicholas Azusenis (Ohio Wesleyan) and pinned Justin Johnson (Mercyhurst North East) before dropping his next two matches. He claimed 5th over Jacob Walker (Washington & Jefferson).

The Pioneers hit the road again next Saturday when they travel to the Baldwin Wallace Tournament.
