Fitzgerald Leads Way as Wrestling Opens up Season

Kyle Fitzgerald (Constableville/South Lewis) led the way with a 3rd place finish as the Alfred State wrestling team had eight place winners as they opened up the 2019-20 season at the Brockport Open. Wrestlers from eight schools competed in the season opening event.

Fitzgerald fell in his opening match of the day but was able to bounce back with five straight victories. He defeated Raymond Murry (NCCC) 7-0, won a sudden victory 3-1 decision over Leroy Williams (NCCC), pinned Kiar Parker (Unattached), and got revenge for his earlier loss with a pin of Jaquan Johnson (Unattached) to advance to the 3rd place match. In the 3rd place match, Fitzgerald earned his third straight pin as he sealed 3rd with a fall just 19 seconds into the match.

Anthony Miraglia (Byron Bergen) finished 4th at 157 lbs. He was 3-2 on the day with a pin of Marcus Unger (Buffalo WC), a medical forfeit win over Jimmy Kramer (Penn State Behrend), and 18-6 over his teammate Jesse Johnson (Horseheads). Johnson finished 6th in the same bracket.

Owen Kissell (Alden) rebounded from a tight loss in his opening match to finish 5th at 141. He finished the day 3-2 with a pair of pins.

Four other Pioneers earned 6th place in their respective weight classes. Brian Hedding (Rush Henrietta) was 3-2 with two pins at 125 lbs., Michael Peck (Selden/Newfield) won his first two matches at 141 (pins of Aaron Asiedu-Wiafe and Zach Rosenthal), Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood) won a pair of matches at 184, and Nicholas Barrett (Avoca) finished 3-3 with a pin at heavyweight.
