Galton Leads Way as Pioneers Finish 4th at Adrian Invitational

Mike Galton (Warsaw) led the Alfred State wrestling team with a 2nd place finish as the Pioneers traveled to Michigan to compete in the Adrian Invitational. The Pioneers finished 4th out of 15 teams competing.

Galton started the day with a 5-1 win over Devin Miller (Heidelberg) in the 174 lb. bracket. He earned a 12-6 win over Eero Gross (Wabash) in the quarterfinals and won 6-2 over Derrick Top (Adrian) to advance to the finals. In the finals, he lost a tight 7-5 decision to Luke Silva (Aurora).

Dawsen Yates (Bolivar Richburg) won his first three matches and finished 4th at 133 lbs. He pinned Jake Campbell (Henry Ford) in 4:41, won 6-5 over Micahel Hazelton (Macomb CC), and pinned Rodney Hendricks (Wabash) to advance to the semifinals. He fell in both the semi's and the 3rd place match to wrap up his day. In that same bracket, Elijah Moshenek (Ringgold, VA) was 5-1 and finished 5th. He fell in his opening match but battled back with three straight pins. He pinned Adam Kates (Case Western), Michael Hazelton (Macomb CC), and Tyler Davis (Adrian). He won a 6-5 decision over Markus Roberts (Manchester) and then won 9-6 over Randy Frailey (Siena Heights) in the 5th place bout.

Sean Peterson (Islip) also finished 5-1 and finished tied for 5th in the 141 lb. bracket. He bounced back from an opening round defeat to pin Zach Smith (Ohio Wesleyan), earned a tech fall 16-0 win, won 9-6 over Jager Kwiatkowski (Henry Ford), won 6-4 over Jake Elasivich (St. Clair), and pinned Kyle Fanson (Heidelberg) to end his day.

Justin Smith (Marcus Whitman) went 4-1 and placed 5th in the 157 lb. weight class. He pinned Micah Mydloski (Heidleberg) and Mostafa Abdel-Maguid (Henry Ford) before falling the quarterfinals. He bounced back to pin Elijah Phillips and teammate Justin Hoffman (Hadley-Luzerne) to advance to the 5th place match. Hoffman finished the day 3-3 in the same bracket earn 8th. Ryan Nugent (Newfane) was 3-2 in that bracket with two pins.

Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood) was 4-2 and earned 7th at 197, Cale Bartosch (Palmyra Macedon) was 2-2 and finished 7th at 184, and Benjamin Rivera (Carmel) was 2-3 and finished 8th at 165.

Alfred State finished with 90.5 points on the day to finish 4th. Wabash won the team title.

The Pioneers have just over a week off before heading to the Scranton for the Electric City Duals.
