Galton and Ilges Lead Pioneers to Third Place Finish at John Summa Invitational

Mike Galton (Warsaw) and Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood) won their individual weight classes to lead the Alfred State wrestling team to a third-place finish at the John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace in Berea, Ohio on Saturday.

Galton went 4-0 on the day at 174. He won by a 3-1 decision over Ryan Haas (Baldwin Wallace) in round two then won by a 15-3 major decision over Connor Kwiat (Ohio Northern) in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal he won by a 9-5 decision over Luke Hopkins (Baldwin Wallace) and in the first-place match he won by a 7-3 decision over Donovan Palmer (Baldwin Wallace) for the title.

Ilges went 3-0 in his matches at 197. In the quarterfinal he won by pin over Geoffry Kaminsky (Ohio Wesleyan) (Fall 1:59). He won my medical forfeit over Joe Benedict (Brockport) in the semifinal and in the first-place match won by a 12-0 major decision over Nick Franco (Brockport).

Sean Peterson (Islip) was runner up at 141 after going 2-1 on the day. Peterson won by pin over David Miller (Baldwin Wallace) (Fall 4:29) in the quarterfinal and went on to win the semifinal by a 7-6 decision over Cael Vanderhorst (Ohio Northern). In the first-place match he lost by a 13-4 major decision to Eli Sims (Brockport).

Anthony Miraglia (Byron Bergen) and Benjamin Rivera (Carmel) both went 4-1 on the day and placed third in their weight classes at 149 and 165 respectively.

Miraglia won by pin over Mahmoud Esa (Brockport) (Fall 6:09) in round one and again in the quarterfinal over Austin Smith (Ohio Northern) (Fall 6:36). He lost by a 3-1 decision in the semifinal to Michael Petrella (Baldwin Wallace) but came back ton win by an 11-6 major decision over Bailey Gibson (Ohio Northern) in the consolation semifinal. In the third-place match, Miraglia won by a 10-5 decision over Jayden Jones (Ohio Northern).

Rivera led the tournament in pins by winning all four of his matches by pin. In round one he pinned Jaret Lowry (Ohio Wesleyan) (Fall 3:48) and in the quarterfinal he pinned Kwame Stewart (Hiram) (Fall 1:12). He lost in the semifinal to Matthew Kline (Brockport) by a 10-2 major decision but came back to win the consolation semifinal by another pin over Jaret Lowry (Ohio Wesleyan) (Fall 1:01). Rivera took home bronze after pinning Kevin Kelly (Baldwin Wallace) (Fall 6:11) in the third-place match.

Jaden Hansen (Newburgh Free) went 3-1 on the day to place third at 133. He won the quarterfinal by a 6-2 decision over Jackson Allen (Baldwin Wallace). He lost the semifinal to Zach Levey (Brockport) by a teach fall (TF-1.5 4:59 (16-1)) but went on to win the consolation semifinal buy a 7-5 decision over Ryan McElwee (Ohio Wesleyan). He won the third-place match by pin over Elijah Moshenek (Alfred State) (Fall 0:16).

The Pioneers head to Brockport on Saturday, Feb. 12 to compete against the Golden Eagles and Penn College.
