Pioneers Shoot Past Vikings

The Alfred State women's soccer team scored six 1st half goals as they cruised to a 8-0 victory over Villa Maria on Friday evening. The Pioneers are now 5-3 on the year.

Leigh Swartzfager (Keshequa) got the Pioneers on the board in the 4th minute when she scored on a rebound. The goal by Swartzfager was her first of the season.

The blue and gold put the game out of reach with three goals in a seven minute span. Melissa Minetti (Livonia) scored after a long pass from Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) in the 13th minute. Salatel picked up another assist in the 18th minute when she used some fancy footwork to find Julia Yanarella (Wapingers Falls/Roy Ketcham) who scored her first of two goals on the night. Minetti scored 1:37 later after getting a long pass from Taryn Dechow (Randolph).

Kylie Newman (Waverly) scored on a rebound in the 32nd minute and Sarah Finzer (Wayne) scored her first of the season in the 34th minute to cap the 1st half scoring. The Pioneers held a 21 to 1 shot advantage in the 1st half.

Yanarella's second goal of the game came in the the 50th minute and Salatel found the back of the net in the 87th minute after getting a pass from Allison Danielak (Brockport). 

Alfred State held a 30 to 3 shot advantage in the contest. Danielak made one save in the 1st half while Kathryn Parsons (York) made a save in the 2nd. Melyssa Olmstead tallied 11 saves for the Vikings.

The Pioneers are back in action next Saturday when they travel to SUNY ESF for a 3 p.m. contest with the Mighty Oaks.
