Spikers Tame Mavericks

The Alfred State volleyball team won their second straight and their third in their last four as they defeated Medaille 25-23, 25-23, and 25-19. The Pioneers are now 3-4 on the year.

In a back and forth opening set, the Pioneers scored six straight points to erase a 17-15 deficit. The Mavericks cut the lead to 21-20 but the blue & gold scored the next three points and held off a Medaille rally to take the set.

In the second set, the Pioneers trailed 18-15 but scored the next four points to grab back the lead. After the Mavericks tied it up at 21-21, Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) recorded back-to-back kills to take control of the set.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set and never gave back the lead as they wrapped up the sweep. 

Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) led the Pioneers with 15 kills and five digs. Madison Webster (Corning) led the way with 16 digs, Sarah Raichlin (Chenango Valley) added 18 assists and 11 digs, and Samantha Tumolo (Manorville/Eastport South Manor) had 13 assists and four service aces. Perkins had six kills while Morgan Hungerford (Lyndonville) and Alyssa Martin (Portville) each had five.

The Pioneers hit .206 on the game, collected 43 digs, and registered seven aces.

Melissa Postek led the Mavericks with nine kills, Savannah Berry passed out 22 assists, and Bailey Salerni led the team with 12 digs. Medaille hit .081 in the contest and recorded six aces.

The Pioneers are in action again on Tuesday when they open up the home portion of their season with a 7 p.m. battle with cross-county rival Houghton College.
