The Alfred State volleyball team defeated Elmira in four sets as they opened the 2019 season with a victory. The Pioneers dropped the opening set 15-25 but rallied to win the next three 25-17, 25-17, 25-21.
Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) led the Pioneers with nine kills while Mya VanDuyne (Newark) finished with seven. Perkins also chipped in four aces while Van Duyne and Alyssa Fox (Letchworth) each had three. Jordan McCooey (Horseheads) passed out 23 assists.
Alfred State continues action at the Cazenovia Invitational tomorrow with a pair of matches. They take on the hosts at 10 a.m. and then battle Mt. St. Mary at Noon.
