Pioneers Advance to Conference Final

The Alfred State Volleyball team won today's AMCC conference semi-final match 3-2 against Penn.- St. Altoona. In a thrilling fifth set, the Pioneers pulled away to win 15-12 and advance to Sunday's final. The Pioneers faced Altoona last weekend in their last regular season match, the two teams also played to five sets in the previous meeting as well.

Coming off a first round bye, the one-seed Pioneers came out strong, winning the first set 25-20. The two teams traded sets the entire match, as Altoona took the second set 25-19. The Pioneers took the third set 25-18. Altoona forced the decisive fifth set, with a 25-21 victory.

In the fifth set the Pioneers attack worked early, putting up three straight points. The first point of the match came from a Keturah Gregory (Laurel, MD / High Point), the second from an Altoona attack error, and the third came from a Nayomie Ferrer Santiago (San Juan, PR / Eastridge) service ace. Altoona quickly tied it up with three straight points of their own. The fifth set stayed at a 1-point differential, until the Pioneers got their much needed two-point gap from a Gregory kill, making it 12-10. Alfred State didn't look back from there, winning the set 15-12 and locking up a spot in the final.

Three Pioneers had double-digit kills. Racquel Gerstenberger (Schoharie, NY / Schoharie) led the way with 19, and tallied a double-double with 17 kills in the match. Karleigh Haines (Jamestown, NY / Jamestown) had 18 kills and 19 digs herself, also notching a double-double on the day. Keturah Gregory had 16 kills and 2 blocks on the match. Adeline Milligan (Pavilion, NY / Pavilion) and Nayomie Ferrer Santiago both had over 20 digs. Milligan led the way with 24 and Ferrer Santiago had 22 of her own, both were key in the Pioneers fighting off the solid Penn.- St. Altoona attack.

The Pioneers will compete in tomorrow's final at 1 p.m. against the winner of Penn.- St. Behrend and Mt. Aloysius.
