Panthers Outlasted by Alfred State in AMCC Opener

Alfred, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team battled back from an early 15-point deficit to have an attempt to tie Alfred State in the final minute of play but came up short, losing the game 83-79.

  • The Panthers' offense was unable to get going early, as they were held without a field goal for the first 7:45 of play. This allowed the Pioneers to open up a 16-1 lead as the Panthers were only able to score on a Cassidy King free throw. Cailey Barnett ended the cold streak, as she hit at three with 2:14 to go. The Panthers began to build momentum after the Barnett three as they were able to force a turnover and Ashley Hall hit another triple. Following an Alfred State jumper, Barnett made a layup to send the game to the second quarter with the Panthers down 18-9.
  • The hosts were able to maintain their double-digit lead throughout the first five minutes of the second quarter, but the Panthers made a push to erase the lead after another Barnett three with 4:06 to go. The Panthers were able to get a defensive stop on the ensuing possession and Hannah Lary was able to make a layup through contact. She made the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play. Barnett followed a Pioneer basket with another long ball and Lary sank another mid-range jumper to cut the lead to just three points with 2:30 to go in the quarter.
  • To finish the first half, the teams traded free throws and the hosts made one last jumper to send the game to the break with the Pioneers leading 40-35.
  • In the third, Alfred State was able to slowly push their advantage back to twelve points, but a 7-0 run in the final minute of the quarter saw the Panthers get the deficit back to five. Barnett and Lary both hit midrange jump shots and Hall made a final three with 15 seconds on the clock.
  • Both teams traded baskets early in the final quarter, as the Pioneer advantage see-sawed between 7 and 5 points. The Panthers were able to begin to catch the hosts after three minutes. Following a missed free throw, Barnett made a jumper and King made one of two from the line to get the Panthers back to within three points. 
  • After trading baskets for the next four minutes, the Panthers were able to cut the lead to just one point when King and Lary made layups on back-to-back possessions. Lary made another midrange jumper to answer a pair of free throws and King hit a long two with 56 seconds remaining to keep the Panthers down one. 
  • In the final minute, the Panthers were able to get two stops but were unable to convert the game-tying shot. The Pioneers added two late free throws to seal the win.

Cailey Barnett led the charge for the Panthers as she finished the game with career-high 25 points. She made 8 of 18 from the field, including 4 of 6 from beyond the act and made 5 out of 6 free throws. She also grabbed 8 total rebounds and recorded 2 assists and 2 steals. Hannah Lary also set a new career-high as she scored 22 points. She shot 50% from the field, made 5-8 free throws, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists. Cassidy King also finished in double figures, as she scored 13 points.

The Panthers fall to 2-7 on the season and 0-1 in AMCC play. They are scheduled to take on Penn State-Altoona on Saturday with the game beginning at 2:00 p.m.
