Pioneers Fall in Regional Opener

The Alfred State baseball team opened up Region III Division III play on the road at Erie CC. The Kats won a 3-2 walk-off contest in the opener and then scored seven-runs in the 6th inning en route to a 11-2 victory.

In the opener, the Pioneers trailed 1-0 until the 6th when they scored twice.  ECC tied the game back up in the 6th and won the game on a throwing error in the bottom of the 7th.

The Pioneers got a solid pitching performance from Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH).  Caldwell went 6.1 allowing five hits and no earned runs.  He walked one and struck out three.  Offensively, the Pioneers were held to four singles on the day.

In the nightcap, the Kats led 3-2 after three innings but scored a run in the 5th and six more in the 6th to put the game out of reach.  Caldwell finished 2 for 3 with a double for the Pioneers while Michael Durkin (Jeffersonville/Sullivan West) and Nicholas Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) collected RBI.

The Pioneers head into a four-game weekend series with Broome CC starting on Saturday at 1 p.m.  Games 3 & 4 of the series are scheduled for Sunday at Alfred at 1 p.m.
