Pioneers Fall to No. 1 Salisbury College on Opening Day

The Alfred State baseball team opened their season against the defending NCAA Division III National Champions and No. 1 ranked Salisbury College on Saturday.

Game one: ASC 7, SC 17

The Pioneers recorded 8 hits, 7 runs, 7 RBIs and 2 errors.

The Sea Gulls had 14 hits, 17 runs, 15 RBIs and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) had two RBIs.

What happened:

Salisbury led 3-0 before Avallone hit a two-run homerun to right field to bring in Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) in the top of the third.

The Sea Gulls scored six runs in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth Bobby Sellers (Henrietta) and Nick Serce (Irondequoit) both hit solo homeruns to right field. Lansing doubled to right field to plate Gavin Moore (Hilton) and Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) scored off a fielder's choice.

Salisbury scored six more in the bottom of the fourth.

Mersmann singled to right field to plate Serce in the fifth.

The Sea Gulls scored one in the bottom of the fifth and another in the seventh.

Pitching:

AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) (L, 0-1) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 4 hits, 3 runs, walked 3 and struck out 1.                

Chris Baldwin (Patchogue) pitched 0.1 innings.                   

Chris Catoire (Brooklyn/Fort Hamilton) pitched 0.2 innings and allowed 2 hits, 5 runs, walked 2 and struck out 1.                

Jon White (Clarence) pitched 0.2 innings and allowed 3 hits, 2 runs and walked 1.                                    

James Bilcik (Nanuet) pitched 0.2 innings and allowed 2 hits, 5 runs, walked 2 and struck out 1.                                

Connor Hong (Rochester/Gates Chili) pitched 4 innings and allowed 3 hits, 2 runs and struck out 3.                      

Game two: ASC 3, SC 13

The Pioneers recorded 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and 3 errors.

The Sea Gulls had 10 hits, 13 runs, 10 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Avallone went 3-fot-4 with three RBIs.

What happened:

Salisbury led 3-0 before Avallone hit a three-run homer to right field to plate Moore and Lansing.

The Sea Gulls scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the eighth.

Pitching:

Nick Serce (L, 0-1) pitched 4 innings and allowed 3 hits, 6 runs, walked 5 and struck out 5.      

Chris Baldwin pitched 0.1 innings and allowed 1 hits and 2 runs.

Ryan Bailey pitched 2 innings and allowed 2 hits, 2 runs, walked 1 and struck out 3.        

Lewis Pettit (Bolivar) pitched 1 inning and allowed 2 hits, 2 runs and struck out 1.   

Christopher Mattoon (Elmira) pitched 1 inning and allowed 2 hits, 1 run and struck out 1.       

The Pioneers head to Ferrum College on Saturday, Feb. 19 for a doubleheader starting at noon.
