The Alfred State baseball team lost two games to the Ferrum College Panthers on Saturday.
Game one: ASC 3, FC 11
The Pioneers recorded 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and 5 errors.
The Panther had 14 hits, 11 runs, 9 RBIs and 1 error.
Pioneer Leaders:
Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay), Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck), Nick Serce (Irondequoit) all hit doubles.
What Happened:
The Pioneers took a 2-run lead in the top of the first after Avallone singled through the left side, advanced to second on the throw and Lansing scored. Avallone scored off a sacrifice fly from Bobby Sellers (Henrietta).
Ferrum scored three runs in the bottom of the first.
Avallone scored again in the top of the third off a double from Dickerson.
The Panthers scored five in the bottom of the fourth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Pioneer Pitching:
AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) (L, 0-2) pitched 3.1 innings and allowed 8 hits, 7 runs, walked 2 and struck out 5.
Jack Josephson pitched 3.2 innings and allowed 5 hits, 3 runs, walked 2 and struck out 6.
Zachary Morse (Canandaigua) pitched 1 inning and allowed 1 hit and 1 run.
Game two: ASC 9, FC 10
The Pioneers recorded 13 hits, 9 runs, 6 RBIs and 0 errors.
The Panthers had 17 hits, 10 runs, 10 RBIs and 3 errors.
Pioneer Leaders:
Avallone went 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Lansing went 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs.
Sellers went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run.
What happened:
Ferrum took a 1-0 lead after the bottom of the second and the Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the third.
Lansing singled to third base to plate Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond). Mason Gonzalez scored off a double from Avallone and Lansing scored on a wild pitch. Avallone scored off a ground out from Sellers.
The Panthers scored two more in the bottom of the third and the Pioneers responded with five unanswered runs.
Sellers scored in the top of the fifth off a fielder's choice and Serce scored on a pass ball.
In the sixth Sellers scored off an error.
Lansing singled to left center to plate Barinas and scored off a single from Sellers in the seventh for a 9-3 lead.
Ferrum scored one run in the seventh, four in the eighth and two in the ninth to comeback and take the one-run win.
Pioneer Pitching:
Ryan Bailey pitched 6.1 innings and allowed 9 hits, 4 runs, walked 3 and struck out 3.
Chris Baldwin pitched 0.2 innings and allowed 4 hits and 3 runs.
Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) pitched .2 innings and allowed 1 hit, 1 run, walked 2 and struck out 1.
Christopher Mattoon (Elmira) pitched .2 inning and allowed 1 hit, 1 run and walked 1.
Connor Hong (Rochester/Gates Chili) (L, 0-1) pitched .1 inning and allowed 2 hits and 1 run.
The Pioneers will finish their three-game series with Ferrum on Sunday at noon.
