Pioneers Rally to Beat Centre, Serce Hits Two-Run Homer For the Win
The Alfred State baseball team picked up their first win of the season with a 4-2 comeback win over the Centre College Colonels at Gary Wright Field at Fishman Park in Danville, Kentucky on Wednesday.
The Pioneers recorded 7 hits, 4 runs, 4 RBIs and 0 errors.
The Colonels recorded 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 0 errors.
Pioneer Leaders:
Nick Serce (Irondequoit) went 1-for-4 with a 2-run homer.
Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) went 1-for-3 with 1 run.
Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) went 2-for-4 with 1 run.
Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI.
What Happened:
The Colonels scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning and scored again in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh the Pioneers started to mount their comeback. Dickerson started the rally with a single to right field to bring in Burdett. Ryan Santiago (Staten Island, NY / HS of Telecommunications) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Tyler Petery (Schwenksville,PA / Pope John Paul II) to tie the game 2-2.
In the top of the eighth, Serce stepped up to the plate with Mersmann on first base and hit a homer to give the Pioneers the lead 4-2.
The Alfred State defense was able to hold off the Colonels for the comeback win.
Pioneer Pitching:
AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) (W, 1-3) pitched 7 innings and allowed 3 hits, 2 runs, walked 2 and struck out 3.
Christopher Mattoon (Elmira) got the save after pitching 2 innings, walked 3 and stuck out 2.
The Pioneers take on Transylvania again on Thursday at 11 a.m.
