Pioneers Win Big Over Houghton

The Alfred State baseball team won 12-2 against the Houghton College Highlanders at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex in Houghton, New York.

The Pioneers recorded 13 hits, 12 runs, 11 RBIs and 2 errors.

The Highlanders recorded 2 hits, 7 runs, 2 RBI and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) went 4-for-5 with 1 RBI.

Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) went 3-for-5 with 1 RBI

Gavin Moore (Hilton) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs.

Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had 2 RBIs.

What Happened:

The Pioneers had complete control of the game with 12 straight runs including six unanswered runs in the top of the third inning.

Serce started the Pioneers off with a single to left field plating Moore and advanced Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) to second. Burdett singled to right field bringing home Serce and Mersmann and advanced Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) to second. Tyler Petery (Schwenksville,PA / Pope John Paul II) grounded out to third base plating Avallone and advanced Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) to second base and Burdett to third base. Dickerson tripled to right field plating both Lansing and Burdett. 

During the top of the sixth, Mersmann singled to center field plating Barinas and advanced to second on the throw and scored off a grounded out.

In the seventh inning Barinas tripled to right field bringing in Dickerson and Moore hit a two-run homer to left field. 

In the top of the eighth inning Serce scored on a wild pitch. 

The Highlanders scored two runs during the bottom of the eighth inning ending the game 12-2.

Pioneer Pitching:

Spencer Riehler (W, 1-0) pitched 7 innings and allowed 6 hits, 2 runs, walked 2 and struck out 2.

James Bilcik (Nanuet) pitched 1 inning and struck out 2.

The Pioneers will play at RIT on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
