Serce Hits Two Homers, Pioneers Continue Win Streak

The Alfred State baseball team opened up conference play by picking up two wins over the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats at Ridilla field in Greensburg, Pennsylvania on Saturday to stretch their win streak to six.

Game one: ASC 5, UPG 2

The Pioneers (8-15, 2-0 AMCC) recorded 3 hits, 5 runs, 3 RBIs and 1 error.

The Bobcats (0-15, 0-2 AMCC) recorded 8 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI.

What Happened:

During the top of the second inning Barinas doubled to right field bringing home Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer).

Serce hit a home run with Tyler Petery (Schwenksville,PA / Pope John Paul II) on base giving the Pioneers the early lead 3-0.

The Bobcats scored in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Pioneers scored on two different wild pitches during the top of the sixth inning. On the first wild pitch Mersmann advanced to third and Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) scored. On the second wild pitch Mersmann made it home.

The Bobcats scored one last run during the bottom of the sixth inning.

Pioneer Pitching:

AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) (W, 3-3) pitched 5 innings and allowed 5 hits, 2 runs, walked 2 and struck out 4.

Christopher Mattoon (Elmira) pitched 2 innings and allowed 3 hits, 0 runs, walked 0 and struck out 1.

Game two: ASC 6, UPG 1

The Pioneers recorded 15 hits, 6 runs, 5 RBIs and 2 errors.

The Bobcats recorded 6 hits, 1 run, 0 RBIs and 3 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Mersmann went 4-for-4 with 1 run.

Serce went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 1 run.

Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) went 2-for-5 with 1 RBI and 1 run.

What happened:

The Pioneers did not take their foot off the break for the second game.

During the top of the third inning Serce started the Pioneers off with a home run and Burdett singled to left field plating Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy).

The Bobcats scored one run in the fourth inning.

The Pioneers scored four unanswered runs in the top of the eighth inning. 

Lansing hit a single and advanced to second bringing home Mersmann.

Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) stole second and Lansing stole home plate.

Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) reached first base on an error and Barinas scored.

To wrap up the game, Serce singled to right field plating Curabba.

Pioneer Pitching:

Jack Josephson (Penfield) (W, 3-1) pitched 7 innings and allowed 5 hits, 1 run, walked 2 and struck out 5.

Chris Baldwin (Patchogue- Medford) pitched 2 innings and allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, walked 0 and struck out 0.
