Pioneers Pull Away From Tigers

 
 

Rochester, NY – The Alfred State baseball team picked up a win against RIT, 13-7. The Pioneers improve to 4-4 on the early season. 

The Pioneers threw out two pitchers with Ryan Kinney getting the start.  

Kinney got the win for the Pioneers and pitched 6.2 innings and tallied seven strikeouts. Christopher Mattoon pitched 2.1 innings and got the save for Alfred State. 

Jack Curabba finished 3-for-4 on the day, with one RBI. Caleb Walker recorded a double and a homer. Elijah Barinas recorded 4 RBI's and a triple. 

The Pioneers scored their first run of the game in the second, after a single by Tyler Korsky set up a run for Joshua Gardner. The Pios picked up two unearned runs from Curabba and Devin Mersmann in the third to take an early 3-1 lead. The Tigers responded with two runs of their own to knot the game at 3 at the end of the third.  

Alfred State had a big fourth inning, totaling four runs. Walker started the inning with a solo homerun to right field. With bases loaded, Gardner was hit by a pitch which brought Curabba home. Connor Kiefer reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI as Bobby Sellers scored. A single to right field from Barinas set up a run for Mersmann. The Pios led 7-3 at the end of four innings. 

In the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly from Gardner scored a run for Sellers. In the seventh, the Tigers brought in three runs to bring them within one, 8-7 Pios. To start the ninth, Barinas tripled down the right field line to bring Kiefer and Anthony Snyder home. Then, a single by Korsky recorded a run for Barinas. A few batters later, Korsky brought in a run set up by a Curabba single. A no run inning in the ninth for the Tigers gave the Pioneers a 13-7 victory. 

The Pioneers will travel to Tacoma, WA for spring break and they will face off against Puget Sound for a doubleheader on Saturday March 9th.
