Football Wraps Up Season

The Alfred State football team wrapped up the 2015 season with a 44-12 loss to Morrisville State.

Cristian Pena dove in from one-yard out 2:34 into the game to give the Mustangs an early 7-0 lead but the Pioneers answered right back with a four-yard TD pass from Ben Wilkerson (Fayette-Ware) to Dante Jordan (New York/Law & Public Service) 2:13 later (2-point conversion failed).

Cory Benedetto threw two touchdown passes to add to Morrisville's lead. His first a 75-yard pass play to Marcus Jackson-Conner with 1:28 remaining in the 1st and then threw a 18-yard scoring pass to Anthony Mella to make it 20-6 with 11:17 left in the 1st half.

Wilkerson cut it to 20-12 with 7:17 left in the 2nd when he fought off a tackler and heaved a 17-yard touchdown pass to Romiio Littlejohn (Beooklyn/Grand Street Campus) in the back of the end zone.

Pena scored from four yards out with 5:21 remaining in the half and then scored again on a 16-yard run early in the 2nd half to give the Mustangs a comfortable 32-12 lead. Darrell West scored from three-yards out in the 3rd and Brandon Gwinner capped the scoring with a seven-yard run midway through the 4th.

Pena finished with a 111 yards and three scores on 13 carries while Benedetto was 8 for 13 for 185 yards and two scores. Jackson-Conner caught three passes for 107 yards.

Wilkerson finished 20 for 32 for 181 yards and two scores for Alfred State. He also led the team with 40 yards rushing on 15 attempts. Littlejohn caught seven passes for 61 yards while Khris Greggs (Aquinas) added seven catches for 56 yards.

Caleb Wright led the Mustangs with eight tackles while Richardson Derosena finished with seven tackles and a sack. Morrisville held the Pioneers to 246 yards, recorded three sacks, and had one interception.

John Garbowski (Mohegan Lake) led the blue & gold defense with 10 tackles and a sack. Steven Hubick (Fountain Hills, AZ) had nine tackles and Jake Dollard (Attica) finished with seven. Donnell Scott (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) intercepted a pass.

Prior to the game, Alfred State honored six seniors playing in their final game: Wilkerson, Garbowski, Kenneth Nelson (Oakland, CA), Jason McMahon (Chautauqua Lake), Daniel Napolionello, and Erik Simmons (Elmira Free). 

Alfred State will open up the 2016 season on September 3rd when they travel to William Paterson.
