Alfred State jumped out to an early lead but Houghton used a run to end the 1st half and another to start the 2nd half en route to a 80-58 victory. Houghton is now 1-6 while Alfred is 0-6.
Alfred State jumped out to the early lead behind the hot shooting of Tavon Moore (Syracuse/Bishop Grimes). The Pioneers led 30-22 with 5:48 remaining but the Highlanders finished the half on a 16 to 4 run to lead 38-34 at the break. Houghton stayed hot to start the 2nd and put the game out of reach with a 15-2 run.
Tyler McQuaid led Houghton with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Johnathan Stowe chipped in 12 points and 10 boards off the bench. Houghton held a 54 to 44 rebounding advantage including a 26 to 15 edge on the offensive glass.
Tommy Hutson (Brooklyn/Susan McKinney) led the blue & gold with 22 poins while Moore finished with 17. Jared Bard (Jordan Elbridge) grabbed a team high 10 boards.
Alfred State shot just 37.1% from the field while Houghton shot 39.5% for the game. The Pioneers were slowed down by 18 turnovers.
The Pioneers return to action on Thursday when they travel to Davis College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in Binghamton.
