Cold Shooting Hurts Pioneers

Alfred State shot only 36.6% from the field as they fell 81-61 to Hilbert College on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks used a 27-7 run to close out the 1st half to take the lead after the Pioneers started off fast and led by as many as 13 early on. 

The Pioneers came out firing in the 1st half and grabbed a 25-12 lead over the Hawks. The Hawks turned the tide and ended the half on a 27-7 run to head into the break with a 39-32 lead. Hilbert added to their lead in the 2nd half and led by as many as 28 points.

Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) led the Pioneers with 10 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Marvin Cyrus (Washington DC) came off the bench and had nine points while Tyler Elliot (Perry) and Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) both finished with eight.

The blue & gold were 26 for 71 from the field on the day, just 3 of 16 from three, and hit only 6 of 13 foul shot attempts. The Pioneers were also rebounded 49-37 on the day.

Jerame Owens led Hilbert (12-2) with a double-double. He was 7 for 11 from the field for a game-high 21 points. He grabbed 17 boards, passed out five assists, and had four steals. Jalen Smith chipped in 15 and David Arlaud had 10. 

The Hawks shot 46.3% (31 for 67) from the field, 26.7% from three, and hit 15 of 17 foul shots.

The Pioneers are on the road again on Saturday when they travel to SUNY ESF for a 1:30 p.m. contest with the Mighty Oaks (please note the half hour change in the time).
