Pioneers Win Allegany County Battle

The Alfred State men's basketball team evened up their record with a 82-80 victory over Allegany County rival Houghton College.

After a back and forth start, Houghton held a 12-7 lead. Alfred State answered with a 12-0 run and led the rest of the half. They went into the break holding a 43-39 advantage. The Highlanders scored the first four points in the 2nd half to tie it up but the Pioneers scored the next ten and never trailed again. ASC had a 15-point advantage, 73-58 with 7:06 remaining before Houghton mounted a comeback. They cut the lead and had chances to tie the game but were unable to capitalize. 

Josh Reding (Spencerport) was the top scorer for ASC with 13 points. He added six boards. Tavion Williams (Bronx/FDA) finished with 11 points and nine boards while Paris Jamison (Brooklyn/East Side Community) and Mekhi Belcher (Union Endicott) each had 11. Donte Jones (Brooklyn Collegiate) added nine.

Alfred State was 25 for 69 from the field, 9 for 24 from three, and 21 for 29 from the foul line.

Jordan Holmes led Houghton (0-4) with 17 points. Four Highlanders finished in double-figures. As a team, Houghton was 28 for 70 on the game, 7 for 22 from three, and 17 for 23 from the line.

The Pioneers play a pair of games this weekend in the Rt. 20 Classic. They travel to Cazenovia on Friday for a 7 p.m. battle vs. the Wildcats and then head to Morrisville on Sunday for a 3 p.m. game.
