Spring Break Trip Winding Down

Spring Break Trip Winding Down

The Alfred State softball team lost a hard fought 3-2 battle with Wooster (OH) and then was tripped up 12-4 by Salem State (MA) on day five of their spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Classic.

In the opener, the Lady Pioneers and Fighting Scots squared off in a classic battle filled with solid defensive plays. The Scots took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st on a two-run single by Bridget Serruier. The game remained remained 2-0 behind the solid pitching of Tonia Tinker (Alfred Almond) and several highlight film defensive plays by Allison Gibson (Arkport) at third base.

Alfred State got on the board in the 5th inning following three singles. Coutney McDaniel (Arkport) and Kelsey Lewis (Johnson City) singled before Gibson followed with a single to right that forced an errant throw from the outfield that allowed McDaniel to score.

McDaniel tied the game up in the 6th inning when she lifted a sac fly to center that scored Stormi Kruger (Medina). Kruger had led the inning off with a single.

Marissa Gorvet led the bottom of the 7th off for Wooster. She advanced all the way to 3rd on a sac bunt and narrowly beat out the throw home on an one out infield hit by Maddy Chase.

Gibson was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4. Tinker took the hard luck loss after throwing 6.1 innings on the mound. She allowed eight hits and three runs.

Chase scattered seven singles and two walks in the complete game victory for Wooster. She also was 2 for 4 at the plate. Serruier led the Scots with a 3 for 3 day.

In the nightcap, Salem scored five runs in the 1st and three more in the 3rd to take control. The Lady Pioneers got on the board in the 4th on a RBI single by Kruger. In the 5th, Alfred State trailed 9-1 and plated three runs keyed by a two-run single by Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone). The Vikings answered with three more runs in the bottom of the 5th to end the contest.
