Valley Forge
The Alfred State team ran their winning streak to four games as the offense exploded for a pair of victories at the University of Valley Forge on Saturday. The Pioneers are now 6-6 on the season following 19-1 and 20-1 victories over the Patriots.
In the opener, the Pioneers collected 23 hits and used a pair of seven run innings (3rd and 4th innings) as they cruised to the victory. Morgan Franklin (Wellsville) led the way with a 4 for 5, 4 RBI game while Marissa Varela (Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) was 3 for 5 with 4 RBI. Both Franklin (a solo homer in the 1st) and Varela (a two run homer in the 3rd) hit home runs. Arianna Traugott (Elmira) was 3 for 4 with a RBI and earned the victory on the mound allowing just two hits and no earned runs in five innings of work.
Betsy Butlak (Angola/Lake Shore) was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI, Jamie Parente (Mount Sinai) was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI, Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) was 2 for 5 with a RBI, Ashley Peterson (Valley Central) was 2 for 4 with a RBI, and Jordan Leonard (Lancaster) was 2 for 3.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers scored four in the 1st and eight more in the 2nd to put the game out of reach. The blue & gold collected 15 hits in the contest. Parente led the offensive attack with a 3 for 5 day. Traugott was 2 for 4 with 5 RBI. Her three-run homer to right center highlighted the 2nd inning. Franklin, Fisher, Varela, and Peterson all had two hits. Peterson and Varela were both credited with 3 RBI. Fisher allowed just one hit and one earned run in a five inning complete game.
A scheduled doubleheader on Sunday vs. Cairn was cancelled so the blue & gold will have a few days off before hosting Pitt Bradford on April 4th for their home opening doubleheader.
