Pioneers Battle at Greensburg

The Alfred State softball team wrapped up a weekend road trip at Pitt-Greensburg on Sunday. The Bobcats were able to earn the sweep with 8-6 and 10-2 victories.

In the opener, Kailey Wonica (Staten Island/Moore Catholic) got the Pioneers on the board in the 1st when she double to right center to score Sarah Boyce (Cortland). The Bobcats took the lead for good with a six run 3rd inning. They added another run in the 4th before Karlee Stone (Brockport) drove in Emma Smithers (Waterloo) with a RBI grounder to third. Greensburg made it 8-2 with another run in the 6th.

The Pioneers rallied in the 7th, Angela Martone (Candor) scored on an error, Wonica hit a RBI single that scored Boyce while Audrey Farrell (York/Notre Dame) scored on an error, and Wonica scored on another error to cut it to 8-6. The Pioneers had the tying run at bat when Greensburg was able to record the final out.

Wonica was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI to pace the Pioneers eight-hit attack. Boyce finished 2 for 4.

The Bobcats scored runs in every inning of the nightcap. They scored a single run in the 1st and three in the 2nd before Wonica hit a sac fly to center to score Boyce to get the Pioneers on the board in the 3rd. UPG scored two more in the 3rd and single runs in the 4th and 5th to make it 8-1. In the 5th, Smithers hit a RBI single to right to score Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) but the blue & gold would not get any closer. Greensburg ended the contest with two more runs in the bottom of the 6th.

Fisher was 3 for 3 in the nightcap.

The Pioneers play their final AMCC games of the regular season on Tuesday when they travel to Hilbert. The 3 p.m. doubleheader will be played at Gowanda High School.
