Pioneers Beat Maine Presque Isle, Fall to Skidmore

The Alfred State softball team split on Thursday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida to move to 3-5 overall.

In their first game against Maine Presque Isle (0-7), the Pioneers cut the Owls rally short to take the 6-5 win. In their second game they fell to Skidmore (6-2) 10-2 in five innings.

Game one:

The Pioneers recorded 6 runs, 12 hits, 6 RBIs and 2 errors.

MPI recorded 5 runs, 9 hits, 5 RBIs and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs including 1 double and 1 triple.

Faith Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) went 3-for4 with 1 RBI and 1 run.

Skylar Shaulis (Ovid, NY/South Seneca) went 2-for-4 with 2 runs.

Kaylee Griffith (Niagara Falls) hit a triple.

How it Happened:

The Pioneers scored six unanswered runs for a 6-0 lead in the top of the sixth.

In the first, Wonica doubled to left field to plate Griffith and Wonica scored off single from Felecia Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville).

Shaulis scored off a single to center field from Wonica in the second.

In the third, Abby Beidel (Newville, PA/Big Spring) scored off a single from Faith Capito.

Wonica hit a triple down the right field line to plate Shaulis and Faith Capito in the sixth.

MPI scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh, but the Pioneers defense shut down their rally for the one-run win.

Pioneer Pitching:

Beidel (W, 1-3) pitched 7 innings and allowed 9 hits, 5 runs and struck out 3. She faced 31 batters, threw 79 pitches and 61 strikes.  

Game two:

The Pioneers recorded 2 runs, 4 hits, 2 RBIs and 1 error.

Skidmore recorded 10 runs, 15 hits, 9 RBIs and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Griffith went 2-for-3 with 1 run and 1 double.

Felecia Capito went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs and 1 double.

Wonica went 1-for-3 with 1 run.

How it Happened:

Skidmore took a 9-0 lead after the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth Felecia Capito doubled to center field to plate Griffith and Wonica.

Skidmore scored one more in the top of the fifth and held off the Pioneers offense to take the eight-run win in five innings.

Pioneer Pitching:

Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN/Southport) (L, 2-2) pitched 5 innings and allowed 15 hits, 10 runs and struck out 2. She faced 30 batters, threw 77 pitches and 56 strikes.  

The Pioneers will play Western Connecticut State at 9 a.m. and Oneonta at 11 a.m.to wrap up their Florida trip.
