Fisher Strikes out 10 Against Western Connecticut State, Softball Loses Two

The Alfred State softball team lost both games on Friday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida to move to 3-7 overall.

In their first game against Western Connecticut State (8-5), the Pioneers lost 6-2. In their second game they fell to Oneonta (8-4) 10-2 in five innings.

Game one:

The Pioneers recorded 2 runs, 6 hits, 2 RBIs and 3 errors.

WCS recorded 6 runs, 11 hits, 6 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 2-for-3 with 1 run.

Nicole Youngberg (Falconer) went 2-for-3.

Kaylee Griffith (Niagara Falls) went 1-for-3 with 1 run.

Felecia Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) went 1-for-3 with 1RBI.

How it Happened:

WCS scored one in the second, third and fourth and three in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth Youngberg singled down the right field line to plate Griffith and Felecia Capito doubled down the left field line to bring home Wonica.

Pioneer Pitching:

Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN/Southport) (L, 2-3) pitched 7 innings and allowed 11 hits, 6 runs, walked 1 and struck out 10. She faced 35 batters, threw 135 pitches and 99 strikes.  

Game two:

The Pioneers recorded 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 RBI and 3 errors.

Oneonta recorded 10 runs, 13 hits, 8 RBIs and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Wonica went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI.

Youngberg went 1-for-2 with 1 run.

Griffith went 1-for-2.

How it Happened:

Youngberg scored off an error in the second.

Oneonta recorded four runs in the top of the third.

Brianna Dittman (Brooklyn/James Madison) scored in the bottom of the third off a single from Wonica.

Oneonta scored three more in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Pioneer Pitching:

Abby Beidel (Newville, PA/Big Spring) (L, 1-4) pitched five innings and allowed 13 hits, 10 runs and walked 1. She faced 31 batters and recorded 101 pitches and 63 strikes.

The Pioneers head back to New York to play Nazareth on Wednesday, March 23 in a doubleheader at 3pm and 5pm.
