Pioneers Fall Twice to Medaille

Despite recording a combined 18 hits, the Alfred State softball team (5-13, 1-3 AMCC) lost both games against the Medaille College Mavericks (18-8, 7-1 AMCC) on Tuesday in Alfred, N.Y.

Game one: ASC 3, MC 7

The Pioneers recorded 3 runs, 8 hits, 3 RBIs and 4 errors.

The Mavericks recorded 7 run, 14 hits, 7 RBIs and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Kaylee Griffith (Niagara Falls) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Sarah Boyce (Cortland) went 2-for-4 with 1 run.

Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI.

How it Happened:

The Mavericks scored three in top of the second.

In the bottom of the third Griffith tripled to center field, plating Skylar Shaulis (Ovid, NY/South Seneca)

and Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN/Southport).

Medaille scored three more runs in the fifth.

Boyce scored in the bottom of the fifth off a single from Wonica.

The Mavericks scored one more run in the sixth.

Pioneer Pitching:

Fisher (L, 3-7) pitched 7 innings and allowed 14 hits, 7 runs, walked 1 and struck out 2. She faced 36 batters, threw 95 pitches and 62 strikes.

Game two: ASC 5, MC 15

The Pioneers recorded 5 runs, 10 hits, 5 RBIs and 4 errors.

The Mavericks recorded 15 runs, 18 hits, 15 RBI and 3 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Griffith went 3-for-4 with 1 run.

Boyce went 2-for-4 with 1 run.

Faith Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run.

Wonica and Felecia Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) each had 2 RBIs.

How it Happened:

Medaille scored one in the top of the first and Alfred State came back in the bottom scoring three runs.

Faith Capito started them off with a single to left field to plate Griffith. Her twin sister Felecia Capito hit a single to center field to bring in Faith Capito and Nicole Youngberg (Falconer).

The Mavericks scored four in the second and one in the third.

In the bottom of the fourth Wonica singled to left field to plate Boyce and Shaulis to tie the game 5-5.

Medaille scored one in the fifth, four in the sixth and four in the fifth for the 10-run win.

Pioneer Pitching:

Abby Beidel (Newville, PA/Big Spring) (W, 2-6) pitched 5 innings and allowed 9 hits, 8 runs, walked 6 and struck out 1.

Fisher pitched 2 innings and allowed 9 hits, 7 runs and struck out 1.

The Pioneers are home Thursday, April 14 to play AMCC foe La Roche in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
