Strong Start Guides Pioneers Past Lions

Alfred State never trailed as they defeated Penn State Altoona 70-55 in the AMCC opener for both teams. The Pioneers are now 4-2 on the year while Altoona falls to 1-6.

The Pioneers were 11 for 15 from the floor and built a 25-8 lead after the 1st quarter. Altoona cut into the lead to 34-21 and slowed down the ASC offense in the 2nd. Behind five points and four boards by Emily Kelley (Andover) in the 3rd quarter, the Pioneers build back their lead and led by as many as 24 early in the 4th quarter before the Lions got things going and cut the lead to 11, 62-51, with 2:53 left in the game. ASC responded and closed the game on a 8-4 run to earn the victory.

My'ana Davis (Greece Athena) led ASC with 20 points, nine boards, and five assists. Kelley had a big all around game finishing with 13 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and seven blocks. Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) also added 13 points and Ivette Lewandowski (Springville Griffith) added 11 points off the bench.

Alfred State was 28 for 54 from the field, 5 for 11 from three, and 9 for 14 from the foul line. They held a huge 47 to 30 advantage on the boards.

Alexis Cannistraci led Altoona with 20 points, six boards, and six assists while Sarah Hutson finished with 19. PSA was 23 for 73 from the field, 3 for 20 from three, and 6 for 7 from the line.

The Pioneers return to action on Friday when they host Houghton for a 5:30 p.m. conteset.
