Pioneers Cage The Hawks

Hamburg, NY- The Alfred State women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season as they took down Hilbert 62-59. They move to 1-6 on the season and 1-0 conference play.

Freshman Sarah Somers lead the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. Taylor Benjamin shot 60 percent from the field as she scored 14 points. Jaiden Williams also had a good game as she scored 13 points.

The Pioneers got the game started with a 10-0 run; Benjamin started the scoring with a layup. A few possessions later, Anna Merry buried a fast break three, then she put in two free throws for the 7-0 lead. Taylor Searle would then add a three of her own to push the lead to 10-0 and force a Hawks timeout.  After the timeout, the Hawks made a layup to try and stop the run, but the Pios continued as they led 19-7 going into the quarter break.

The Hawks answered in the second quarter with a run of their own to cut the lead down to 32-26. After halftime, Hilbert was able to take a 36-34 lead, before Williams knocked down a three to regain the lead. Following some back-and-forth action, Williams knocked down a jump shot, and Somers added a layup to end the quarter with the 46-43 lead.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Pios led 61-57, the Hawks would hit a jump shot and force a Taylor Button timeout with six seconds left. Following the timeout, Williams got fouled and knocked down a free throw to extend the lead to three 62-59. ASC would then get a stop to get the win.
