Pioneers Fall Short Against Lions

Alfred, NY – The Alfred State women's basketball team dropped a close contest to Penn St. Altoona 67-55. The Pioneers fell to 4-17 overall and 3-11 in conference play.

 

Two Pioneers recorded a double-double as Sarah Somers had 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Taylor Benjamin scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds. Jaiden Williams had seven points and Taylor Searle added six points.

 

Somers got the scoring started with a layup in the first minute to give the Pioneers the early lead. Somers and Benjamin combined for 11 points in the first quarter, but the Pioneers still trailed 14-13 after the 1st.

 

Jenna George made a layup halfway through the second quarter to give Alfred State a three-point lead. The Lions would close out the quarter on an 11-0 run and led 31-23 at halftime.

 

The Pioneers kept the game close throughout the 3rd quarter and a layup by Benjamin at the end of the quarter made the score 44-40 Lions. The Lions opened the 4th quarter on a 17-5 run and were able to close out the game, winning 67-55.
