Pioneers Wrap up Games in Myrtle

The Alfred State baseball team wrapped up the Myrtle Beach portion of their 2017 spring break on Saturday. The Pioneers fell 7-2 and 10-5 to Rutgers Newark.

The blue & gold got on the board first in the 1st inning as they capitalized on a two-out error to score Cullen Franz (Cazenovia). The Scarlet Raiders answered back with a big bottom half of the inning plating six runs with the big blow coming when Adam Tricarico hit a three-run homer.

Rutgers Newark made it 7-1 with a run in the 4th but Lucas Cornell (Alfred Almond) answered that with a RBI single in the top of the 5th. Neither team could get on the board the rest of the way.

Thomas Hunter (White Plains/Salesian) kept the Pioneers in the game with 5.1 innings of solid relief work. He allowed four hit and one earned run. No Pioneer had multiple hits in the contest, Jesse Swan (Campbell Savona) did connect on a double and Franz reached base three times (two walks and a hit by pitch).

Ross Halkias was 4 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead Rutgers while JC Ball was 2 for 4. Dominick Fazio pitched three effective innings out of the pen allowing two hits to earn the victory.

In the nightcap, both teams got on the board in the 1st inning. Anthony Perconte drove in a run on a grounder that was misplayed and Cornell tied it up with a RBI single in the bottom of the inning. 

The Scarlet Raiders regained the lead in the 3rd with a pair of runs. Ball hit a RBI double and Perconte singled home Ball. Kevin Tamsula connected on a solo homer in the 4th to make it 4-1.

In the 5th, the Pioneers had a big inning and regained the lead, 5-4, with three runs. Franz hit a sac fly, Swan and David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) collected a RBI singles, and Robert Cardona (Harlem/All Hallows).

Rutgers Newark answered back again in the top of the 6th with four of ther own. Ball dropped a RBI single into center and Josh Cote followed with a three-run homer over the left field fence. They added two more insurance runs in the 7th on a 2-RBI single by Tamsula.

Cornell led the Pioneers with a 4 for 4 day while CardonThe Pioneers collected 10 hits in the contest.

Tamsula was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI for Rutgers while Ball was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Dan Murphy earned the win out of the pen while Brandon Terrizzi pitched the final 1.2 innings for the save.

The Pioneers finish their spring trip tomorrow afternoon at Noon when they battle Washington & Lee in Lexington, VA.
