Lady Pioneers Sweep Day Two

The Alfred State softball team swept day two of their trip to the Gene Cusic Classic. The Lady Pioneers downed Wheelock (MA) 10-2 and then defeated Rockford (IL) 12-7. The blue & gold are now 2-2 on the year.

In the opener, the Lady Pioneers used a six run 4th inning to regain the lead from Wheelock. Trailing 2-1 heading into the 4th, Kelsey Lewis (Johnson City) tied it up with a RBI ground out. Claire Hartman (Alden) followed with a RBI double, Lura O'Keefe (Allegany Limestone) hit a two-run triple, and Stormi Kruger (Medina) tripled home O'Keefe and scored on a throwing error.

O'Keefe was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI to pace the Lady Pioneers 12-hit attack. Allison Gibson (Arkport) was 2 for 2 and reached base four times while Kruger drove home two runs.

Jordan Leonard (Lancaster) threw a three-hit complete game. She walked five and struck out seven to earn her first collegiate victory on the mound.

In the nightcap, Alfred State trailed Rockford 7-6 heading into the 7th but the blue & gold scored six runs to regain the lead and secure the sweep. O'Keefe tied the game when she scored on a wild pitch after leading the inning off with a double. Trisha Shingleton (Byron Bergen) connected on a RBI double to give the Lady Pioneers back the lead. Courtney McDaniel (Arkport) and Lewis followed with RBI singles while Gibson added a RBI groundout and Hartman hit a sac fly.

Alfred State scored four in the 4th to erase a 1-0 lead and led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the 6th. In the 6th, the Regents scored six runs to gain a 7-6 lead before the Lady Pioneers put together their big 7th inning.

Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI for the Lady Pioneers while O'Keefe was 2 for 5 with a RBI. Gibson drove in three in the contest while Leonard came out of the bullpen and pitched 1.1 of hit-less relief to earn the victory. 

The Lady Pioneers collected 14 hits in the game and 26 on the day.

After a day off on Saturday, the Lady Pioneers return to action with a 9 a.m. contest vs. Nichols and a 11 a.m. contest with Edgewood.
