Pioneers Drop Two on Spring Break

The Alfred State Softball team dropped both games today as they continue their run in the Gene Cusic tournament in Naples, FL. The Pioneers lost to Mitchell College in a tight 4-2 loss and lost to New York University 8-0.

In Game 1:

The Pioneers started the game off slow before opening up the scoreless game with two runs in the third inning. Nicole Youngberg (Falconer, NY) singled with Faith Capito (Cuba, NY) and Sarah Boyce (Cortland, NY) both advancing to score. Alfred State continued to play great defense, holding Mitchell scoreless until the fifth and sixth inning, tying the game at two going into the seventh. However, the Pioneers could not sustain the Mariners who scored two runs and held the Pios scoreless to end the game. Despite the loss, the Pioneers were able to have 10 hits compared to Mitchell's five, with Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY) and Youngberg each having three, Boyce having two, and Lauryn Engle (Elba) and Abby Beidel (Newville, PA) each having one.

In Game 2:

Alfred State dropped game two of the day against a talented NYU team by a 8-0 score. The Pioneers struggled to get a hit, but held NYU to only two scores up until the fourth inning. NYU was able to break it open in the fourth with four runs and then continued to score one run each in the next two innings.

Through 13 innings, Beidel threw 158 pitches and only walked two batters on the day.

The Pioneers finish their week in Florida against Lesley and SUNY Delhi tomorrow at the North Collier Sports Complex.
