Poor Shooting Dooms Lady Pioneers in Regional Finals

The Alfred State women's basketball team shot only 26.3% from the field and fell 58-49 to Erie CC in the Region III Division II Finals.  The Lady Pioneers finish the season 19-8 while Erie advances to their second straight National Tournament.

Erie took control of a back and forth contest with a 19 to 8 run to start the 2nd half to stretch their one-point halftime lead to 12, 43-31.  Alfred battled back to within six with 1:05 remaining but could not get any closer.

Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) led the Pioneers with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks while Karley Fanning (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) finished with 12 points and nine boards.  Destiny Brito (Manhattan/Park West) chipped in 12 rebounds, seven steals, and six assists.

Alfred was 21 for 80 from the field, 3 for 15 from three, and just 4 for 12 from the foul line.  The Lady Pioneers held a huge 65 to 46 advantage (27 offensive rebounds) on the boards.

Alexis Gray led the Lady Kats with 18 points and seven rebounds while Bethany Hall chipped in 13.

Witchella and Fanning were both selected to the Region III Division II All-Tournament team for their play over the two-day tournament.
