Senior Day Preview: Men's Basketball vs. Alfred St.

McCANDLESS, Pa. - La roche men's basketball takes on Alfred St. at home this Saturday, February 22nd in the final regular season game of the season at the Kerr. LRU's five seniors, Darrell Barron, Torry Hawkins, Darius Lawrence, Luke McDonough, and Kennedy Smith, will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony starting at approximately 12:45 p.m. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.

La Roche (OVR: 18-6, AMCC: 18-1)

Last Time Out: La Roche defeated Ptt Greensburg in the AMCC Game of the Week Wednesday evening, 79-75 to earn their third straight AMCC regular season title. Darius Lawrence scored the go ahead bucket on a driving layup with 14.5 seconds remaining, his second game winning shot this season. Tyler Frederick led all scorers with 27 points and 11 rebounds, the fourth most points in a game in his career. Austin Hannes scored 19 and shot 4 of 7 (57%) from deep, Hannes highest point total in nine games. LRU's primary ball handlers Darius Lawrence and Kennedy Smith combined for 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. LRU committed a season-low eight personal fouls, allowing UPG to attempt just four free throws.

News and Notes

  • Over the last three seasons, La Roche has gone an incredible 52-3 in regular season conference play.
  • Including last game, the Redhawks are 5-0 this season in games decided by four points or less.
  • At home this season, LRU has averaged 90.8 points, a 50.6% field goal percentage and a 38.8% three point percentage. The Redhawks are 9-0 at the Kerr this season.
  • Tyler Frederick, who was recently featured in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, still leads the conference in points per game (19.7), rebounds per game (11.8) and is second in double-doubles (15). His RPG mark ranks 9th in D-III while his double-doubles rank tied for 8th. The reigning AMCC Player of the Week has been on fire as of late, averaging 24.5 points and 11.8 rebounds while shooting 64% (36-56) from the floor over his last four performances.
  • Including last game, Austin Hannes has drained at least four triples in four games this season. Hannes has averaged 2.5 three pointers per game this season (3rd in AMCC).
  • In AMCC action, La Roche ranks first in points per game (84.2), second in field goal percentage (48.1%) and second in three point percentage (36.5%).

News and Notes

  • The Pioneers are currently in 9th place in the league standings and have already been eliminated from playoff contention, meaning Saturday will be their final game of the year.
  • Alfred State's only conference wins came against D'Youville and Pitt Bradford, who ranks below the Pioneers in the conference standings.
  • 5-11 Sophomore guard Ryan Gentile is the teams leading scorer, averaging 16.2 points per game (7th in AMCC).
  • 5-9 Sophomore point guard Josh Reading is the only other Pioneer averaging over 10 points a game (13.7).
  • 6-5 Freshman forward Markel Jenkins leads the team with 8.2 rebounds per game (5th in AMCC).
  • In conference play, Alfred State has averaged 68.4 points per game (2nd worst in AMCC).

Series History

  • The 2019-20 season is Alfred State's first as members of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The Pioneers were previously members of the American Collegiate Athletic Association prior to joining the AMCC.
  • LRU defeated ASC in the teams first meeting earlier this season on January 8th at Alfred State, 75-62. After being tied with the Pioneers halfway through the first, LRU put together a 16-0 run to pull away from the host team and never looked back. Senior guard Darius Lawrence led all scorers with 18 points.
