Pioneers Sweep Past Corning

The Alfred State baseball team scored 21 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Corning CC on Tuesday afternoon.  The Pioneers won by scores of 10-0 and 11-1 to improve to 9-24 overall and 7-7 in Region III Division III play.

In the opener, the Pioneers scored eight runs in the 2nd inning to take full control of the game.  Eric Mehaffy (Lisbon) was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI  while Colton Caldwell was 2 for 3.  Caldwell also picked up the win on the mound with three innings of two-hit ball. 

Greg Koller (Chesterland, OH) and Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) both drove in two runs while Larry Blocho (Fillmore) tossed two innings of one-hit relief.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers took advantage of nine walks and four hit batters.  Alfred put the game out of reach early with seven runs in the 1st.  Dylan Lewis Ellison (Rexville/Whitesville) was 2 for 4 with 4 RBI while Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward Institute) was 2 for 2 with 3 RBI.

Stephen Solomon (Harrisburg, PA) allowed five hits and one run in five innings of work to earn the victory.  He didn't walk a batter and struck out nine.

The Pioneers and the Red Barons continue their four-game series on Thursday when they battle in Corning starting at 2 p.m.
