Pioneers and Kats Split

Alfred State and Erie CC each rallied to pick up victories as the Pioneers and Kats split a Region III Division III doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  The Kats rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win game one 5-3 while the Pioneers rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the nightcap to win 6-5.

In the opener, Alfred scored three runs in the 4th to grab the lead.  Dylan Lewis-Ellison (Rexville/Whitesville) had a RBI double, Nick Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) had a RBI single, and Eric Mehaffy (Lisbon) hit a sac fly in the inning.

Erie scored four runs in the 6th and scored the game winning run on an error.  The Kats added an insurance run in the 7th.

Greg Koller (Chesterland, OH) was the only Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3.  Steven Stapleton (Williamsville/Sweet Home) tossed six solid innings allowing five hits and striking out five but took the loss.

ECC built a 4-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap before the Pioneers were able to score six runs in the 4th.  Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward Institute) had a key 2-RBI double, Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) had a RBI double, and Mehaffy drew a bases loaded walk in the big inning.

Jordyn Confer (Tioga, PA/Williamson) came out of the pen and tossed 6.1 innings of relief to earn the victory.  He allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out two.  Gonzalez was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. 

The Pioneers are now 18-26 overall and 14-11 in Region III Division III play.  The team travels to Tompkins Cortland CC on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
