Pioneers Sweep First Conference Games

The Alfred State Baseball team swept the double header from Penn.- St. Altoona to open up AMCC play. With a 5-4 and 11-2 win, the Pioneers now start their conference schedule at 2-0.

In Game 1:

The Pioneers fell behind early, with two runs coming in the top halves of the 2nd and 3rd innings for Altoona. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Tim Holler hit a 3-run homerun to put the Pioneers within a run at 4-3. In the fourth inning Alfred State tied the game and took the lead. Elijah Barinas started the inning with a leadoff double, eventually coming in to score the tying run from a Bryson Rigsby two-bagger. Tim Holler then singled, to bring in Rigsby as the Pioneers took the lead 5-4 and held it the rest of the way. Ryan Bailey started the game for Alfred State and went 4+ innings and punched out 7. Josh Van Bramer came in relief and got the Pioneers out of a late-inning jam, eventually earning the save. 

In Game 2: 

The Pioneer bats came out firing on all cylinders. After giving up a 1st inning run, Alfred State put up 6-runs in the first and two more in the 2nd inning. The five hit first inning, led to the Pioneers batting around the order. In the 2nd inning, Sam Dickerson hit a 2-run bomb to dead centerfield to extend the Pioneer lead 8-1. Dickerson had 3 hits in the game and also walked. Owen Lansing hit a homerun in the 7th inning to extend the lead to the final score of 11-2. Christopher Mattoon started the game and went 7 innings strong, allowing only 2 runs on 6 hits. Mattoon struck out 5 on his outing. Nick Serce threw 2 innings of shutout relief, while striking out 3 Altoona hitters. Sam Dickerson, Jack Curabba, Elijah Barinas, Owen Lansing and Devin Mersmann all tallied multiple hits in the game. 

The Pioneers are back on the field at Houghton on Tuesday 4/4.
