Pios Eager to Return Home After Difficult West Coast Trip

McMinville, OR – The Alfred State baseball team's bad luck stretch over the course of the week continued on Saturday, as the Pios dropped both games of a doubleheader vs. Whitman College on a warm Oregon day.

Game one was a brief, one hour forty-five minute affair, in which the Pioneers found themselves down 6-0 by the 3rd inning, eventually falling 7-0. The day-long offensive struggle began in game one, in which the Pioneers could only muster 6 hits, the lone extra-base hit coming off the bat of Devin Mersmann for a double. Chris Mattoon takes the loss, going 7.0 innings while giving up 6 runs on 9 hits, while also striking out 6. Game two was much of the same, with the Pioneers falling in this one 12-0. The game started as a classic pitcher's duel, with Ryan Kinney shutting out Whitman for the first 3.2 innings, before ultimately giving up five earned runs on just five hits. The offensive struggle continued, as the Pios had just two hits, one from the returning Connor Kiefer, who has been battling a hamstring injury the entirety of the trip. The Pioneers fall to 4-13, and look to bounce back this week as AMCC play begins Saturday, when Alfred State travels to Penn State Behrend, in which should be a heavyweight battle between the top two preseason AMCC favorites.
