Alfred State Drops Homecoming Contest

The Alfred State Pioneer Football Team fell 36-35 today to Dean College in overtime.

The Pioneers took the lead early in the first quarter, on a 1-yard run by Justin Horvath (Grand Island, NY / Grand Island). Dean College answered with two touchdowns of their own, ending the first quarter 14-7. In the second quarter, Jake Palmer (Albany, NY / Voorheesville) had a 7-yard run for a touchdown, capping a 84-yard drive by the Pioneers. Tied at 14, Dean college took a 4-play drive with less than 1 minute left and scored putting the Bulldogs up a touchdown. The Pioneers responded quickly with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Horvath to Roman Napoleon (Allegany, NY / Allegany Limestone) to end the half. 

Both defenses came out strong in the second half, not allowing any points in the third quarter. David Harrell (Brooklyn, NY / Fort Hamilton) stood out for the Pioneer defense, totaling ten tackles. Colin Hebbard (Clinton, NY / Clinton) tallied ten tackles of his own. Max Gomes (Delaware, NY / Mahopac) notched a late game interception, stalling the Dean College late-game drive in the endzone. 

The Pioneers took the lead in the fourth, when Palmer broke off a 68-yard run to the endzone from the wildcat. Dean College tied the game with 44 seconds remaining, pushing the game to OT.

Overtime saw another Palmer touchdown run, his third of the day. Palmer tallied 271 yards on the ground and 58 receiving, leading the Pioneer offensive attack all game. The Dean Bulldogs scored a touchdown of their own and converted a two-point play to end the game and take down the Pioneers by one. 

The Alfred State team is back in action next week on October 29, as they travel to Castleton.
