Highlanders Rally to Victory

Houghton College outscored Alfred State 16-6 in the 4th quarter as they rallied for a 57-52 victory on Thursday afternoon. The Highlanders improve to 5-2 while the Pioneers are now 4-3.

Alfred State held a 16-13 lead after the 1st quarter and led 31-27 at the half. The lead went back and forth in the 3rd but the blue & gold led 46-41 heading into the final quarter.

Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) hit a three-pointer with just under five minutes left to give the Lady Pioneers a 51-49 lead. From that point on the Highlanders and Pioneers struggled to score. Elle Reed connected on a pair of foul shots with 30 seconds left to give Houghton the 53-52 lead. The Pioneers had two shot attempts but couldn't get one to fall and Reed sealed the game by hitting four foul shots in the final seconds.

Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) led the Lady Pioneers with 17 points and nine boards while Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) had 14 points and seven rebounds. Kelly Kane (Wellsville) chipped in six points.

Alfred State shot 34.5% from the field (only 18.2% in the 4th quarter). They did hold a slight 42 to 41 rebounding advantage.

Reed led all scorers with 26 points (7 for 8 from the foul line). Leslie Moose finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, Hannah Manwaring had nine points, and Madison Detwiler chipped in seven points and 11 rebounds.

The Highlanders shot 33.3% from the floor in the contest, 21.1% from three, and connected on 13 of 19 foul shot attempts, including 6 of 7 in the 4th quarter.

The blue & gold are home again on Saturday when they host Keuka College. Opening tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
