Pioneers and Hawks Split

Alfred State and Hilbert split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Houghton College.  The Hawks won the opener 6-3 in ten innings while the Pioneers won the nightcap 7-4.

In the opener, Hilbert collected five hits and three runs in the 10th inning to earn the victory in a a drama filled contest.  

The Pioneers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning when they plated a pair on a throwing error. The game remained that way until the 6th when Hilbert got on the board on a passed ball. They tied it up in the 7th on a RBI double by Paul Wujek.

The Pioneers stranded the bases loaded in the 7th and Hilbert left two runners on in the 8th.  In the 9th, Joe Pernick gave the Hawks their first lead of the day when he executed a perfect squeeze bunt.  Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) tied the game up with two outs in the bottom of the inning when he drove a single into left center to score Austin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) who had a two-out infield single to keep the game alive.

In the 10th, John Babocsi connected on a RBI single and Ryan Bonafede added a pair of insurance runs with a two-out two run single.

Wheaton finished the contest 2 for 4 with a RBI while Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward) was 2 for 4.  Vincent McDaniel (Arkport) didn't factor in the decision but threw an effective six innings.  He allowed eight hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out two.

Bonafede was 3 for 6 with 2 RBI while Wujek was 3 for 5 with a RBI.  Tyler Roth earned the win with three innings of work.  He allowed two hits, one unearned run, walked one, and struck out eight.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers jumped out to 7-0 lead and held off a late Hawks rally.  Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) had a two-run triple in the 1st, Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) had a RBI single in the 3rd, and Wheaton put the game out of reach with a three run double in the 4th.

Hilbert scored a single run in the 5th and plated three more in the 6th.  The Hawks had the bases loaded but Zach Jackson (Churchville Chili) recorded the final out.  Jackson got the final three outs in the 7th to record the save.

Kyle Kuzma (Waverly) earned his first collegiate victory with 5.2 innings of work.  He allowed seven hits, three earned runs, and walked four while striking out seven.  Wheaton was 2 for 2 with 3 RBI and Gonzalez was 2 for 3.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow at Medaille.  They are slated for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Mavericks.
