Pioneers Close out Myrtle Beach Trip
The Alfred State softball team couldn't overcome slow starts in either of their contests as they wrapped up their Myrtle Beach trip with a pair of losses, 17-10 to Keystone and 11-2 to the University of St. Joseph's.
In the opener, the Pioneers fell behind 12-0 early but fought back into the game. Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) hit a sac fly in the 3rd and the Pioneers exploded for six runs in the 4th inning to get right back in the game. Stormi Kruger (Medina) had a RBI, Mosier drew a bases loaded walk, Melissa Barber (Nassau/Catholic Central) scored on a wild pitch, and Courtney McDaniel (Arkport) drove in two to make it 13-7.
After Keystone scored two in the 4th, Annie Corrao (Grand Island) hit a RBI single, Kruger drove home a run on a RBI grounder, and Mosier singled home a run to make it 15-10. The Giants scored two more in the 5th and held the Pioneers off the board the rest of the way.
Every Pioneer in the lineup had a hit in the contest. McDaniel was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Barber, Trisha Shingleton (Byron Bergen), and Betsy Butlak (Lake Shore) were each 2 for 4 while Zoe Derr (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) was 2 for 5. Mosier led the team with 3 RBI.
Versus St. Joseph's, the Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the 1st without the benefit of a hit to grab the early lead but the Bluejays bounced right back and scored nine of their own to take control of the contest.
Amaria Sharon fired a two-hitter for St. Joseph's. Derr and Barber collected singles for the Pioneers.
The blue & gold are slated to play a four-game series with Lyndon State (VT) next Saturday and Sunday weather permitting.
