Pioneers Split with D'Youville

The Alfred State softball team collected 14 hits in the nightcap as they split a doubleheader at D'Youville on Tuesday. The Spartans took the opener 6-0 before the Pioneers took game two, 6-4.

Courtney McDaniel (Arkport) and Trisha Shingleton (Byron Bergen) collected back-to-back RBI singles in the 3rd to give the Pioneers the lead in the nightcap. Stormi Kruger (Medina) made it 4-0 the next inning when she hit a 2-RBI single.

Lauren Gawlak collected a RBI single in the 4th to get the Spartans on the board but the Pioneers built the lead with two insurance runs in the 6th. Kruger collected another RBI single and Aubri Mosier (Rome, PA) drove home a run on a fielder's choice.

D'Youville mounted a comeback attempt in the 7th, scoring on RBI singles by Gawlak and Rylie Russo and a wild pitch to cut it to 6-4. With the tying run at bat, Jordan Leonard (Lancaster) recorded the final out to preserve the victory.

Melissa Barber (Nassau/Catholic Central) was 3 for 4, Kruger was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, and McDaniel was 2 for 4 with a RBI. Jillian Kahn (Dansville) and Leonard also collected two hits. All 14 of the Pioneers hits were singles.

In the opener, D'Youville scored three runs in the 3rd, two in the 5th, and one in the 6th. Russo drove in three run for the Spartans while Victoria Purucker was 2 for 3 with a RBI. Cameron Colan also collected two hits. On the mound, Hannah Turek tossed a complete game three-hitter. She walked two and struck out six.

Barber collected two of the Pioneers hits and finished 2 for 2. She was 5 for 6 in the doubleheader.

The blue & gold are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Nazareth for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
