Wrestlers battle tough at Muhlenberg
The Alfred State wrestling team battled tough at the highly competitive Muhlenberg Duals. The Pioneers defeated the hosts 22-21 to open the day, fell 28-13 to Delaware Valley, and lost 24-12 to Brockport.
In the opening match, Zachary Levey (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) got the Pioneers on the board with a pin of Ricky Caamano in 2:32 in the 133 lb. match. Dom Vinci (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) followed with a 5-1 victory over Christopher Dalmau at 141. Muhlenberg took the 149 and 157 bouts before Cale Bartosch (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra Macedon) earned a 6-2 win over Ronnie Grevera at 165. Sean Melanfant (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) won 12-9 at 184 and Blake Ilges (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo Greenwood) pinned Jack Patti at 2:47 at 197 to give the Pioneers the win.
In the second match of the day, the Pioneers won four matches vs. Delaware Valley. Brendon Tanner (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) won 9-8 over Ryan Kelly at 133 and Vinci earned a 9-0 win over Andre Henene at 149 to tie the match at 7-7. Del Valley won the next three matches to take control of the bout. Keaton Renfrew (Phoenix, NY/John Birdlebough) won 10-3 over Cooper Kidd at 184 and Ilges won 5-3 in sudden victory at 197.
Brockport won four of the last five matches to win the final contest for both teams. Elijah Moshenek (Ringgold, VA/Dan River) earned a 6-2 win over Isaiah Jackson to start things out at 125. Vinci completed a perfect day with a 6-5 win over Marquis Lamond at 141. Justin Smith (Rushville, NY/Marcus Whitman) tied the contest at 9-9 with a 6-4 win over Francis Whitehouse at 157. Brockport won tight contests at 165 and 174 and never gave back the lead. Joe LoVerde (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) won 5-0 over Gavin McLaughlin at 184 to make it 15-12 but the Eagles won the final two matches.
Vinci led the way for ASC with three victories on the day.
Alfred State competes at the New York State Championships next Saturday in in Rochester.
