Boyd Honored as Inaugural Recipient of Alfred State National Girls & Women in Sports Day Award

In honor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, the Alfred State athletic department is honoring Gina Boyd with its inaugural Tribute Award. The honor is awarded to a person for their contribution to the betterment of women's athletics at ASC because they have inspired women to play, be active, and realize their full potential.

Boyd has played a major role in women's athletics during her over 30 year career at Alfred State. She has taught, coached, and led during her tenure. In the classroom, she has taught classes like personal fitness, health & wellness, and coaching classes. As a coach, she has 425 victories as the women's basketball coach and was very successful coaching on the diamond highlighted when she led the 1994 softball team to the college's only regional championship. On top of teaching and coaching, Boyd has been the Physical Education Chair, spent time serving as the Senior Woman Administrator, oversaw the Learn to Swim Program, and most recently served as the Director of the Summer Sports Festival. She serves on countless committees across the campus and was a key part in the transition that Alfred State made to the Division III of the NCAA.

Her positive influence in the classroom, on the court, and in the community have influenced thousands and thousands of people. She has been named Coach of the Year six times, received the William Havens Award three times, and has been included in the Who's Who Among America's Teacher Twice. She has coached seven All-Americans and hundreds of All-Conference/Region players.

"As our inaugural Tribute Award recipient, Gina's nomination easily rose to the top," commented members of the NGWSD Committee. "She has accomplished so much here at Alfred State. We see it every day; how she shows up to work, her passion for our students and her positive attitude. She has surely inspired students, athletes, faculty and staff in myriads of ways. We congratulate and thank Gina for her many years supporting women in sport."

The National Girls & Women in Sports Day was started to foster community around the people that work every day to better the lives of girls and women through sport. The Women's Sports Foundation was established in 1974 to advance the lives of women and girls through sports and physical activity. Its mission is to enable all girls and women to reach their potential in sports and life. They provide financial fuel to aspiring champion athletes, fund groundbreaking research, educate, advocate, and they help communities get girls active.
